St Ives in Cambridgeshire is a market town located north of London. This town was previously called Slepe. It contains some of the largest markets in England's and is still an important market town for Eastern England.
ST. Ives is famous for having a chapel on the bridge as this town is right on the banks of the Great Ouse River. Historically this spot was the last natural crossing point of the river.
In the 18th and 19th century St Ives was a bustling trading town as livestock and products could be imported and exported by barges and then carried throughout England on the railway system. Today the river is no longer used for trade but mainly for leisure activities.
St Ives has a Chapel on its bridge, this is only one of five such examples to be found in the UK. At one point in time the bridge was a covered drawbridge though this was eventually changed after the war. The bridges southern arches are actually different from the rest of the bridge because they were blown up during the English Civil War and then later rebuilt in a different style.
Annually St Ives hosts a regatta on the Ouse River. This festival lasts for two days and is a rowing regatta. Besides rowing there are plenty of family entertainment, music and arts and craft stalls. ST Ives also hosts a carnival in the summer. During the first week of December you can attend the Dickensian fair. This has many winter activities, rides, entertainment and stalls.
The Raptor Foundation can be a fun day out as this spot cares for injured birds or prey. They do rehabilitation and rescue hurt, orphans and injured birds or prey. This sanctuary holds over 200 different birds of prey. You should take the time to see one of the flying displays that goes on throughout the day.
