Backpacking is different from a regular trip in so many ways and that's why its essential that backpacker travel insurance should be purchased before you travel. It tends to one of the main things that people forget and they may end up regretting it. There are just so many potential hazards with your trip! Firstly, the standards of hygiene differ from country to country. If you're staying in a youth hostel some are more secure than others. So what should you look for? Backpacker travel insurance tends to be aimed at individuals of the age of 35 and under although some will cover up to the age of 65. The length of time covered frequently starts at four months and can last anything up to a year. Much like any other type of travel insurance, any pre-existing medical condition has to be declared. If you don't divulge this information when buying the policy you may find it void at a later date.

Looking for a trip cancellation only plan?

Stop looking. Trip cancellation only plans are not available. Neither are trip interruption only plans. All trip cancellation / interruption travel insurance plans are package plans that include some (or a lot more) medical, emergency evacuation, luggage, travel delay and other common coverages.

Here are the 2 parts of a trip cancellation travel insurance plan:

Trip cancellation coverage (before you leave on your trip): you, a close family member or a traveling companion gets hurt or sick before you leave (and your doctor advises you against traveling). Travel insurance reimburses you the money you lose. This is especially important if you're concerned about a pre-existing medical condition. Trip interruption coverage (after you leave on your trip): you, a close family member including a non-traveling family member, or a traveling companion gets hurt or sick while you're on your trip and you have to return home early. Travel insurance reimburses you the unused value of your trip plus pays the cost of one-way airfare up to its limit.
How does trip cancellation travel insurance work?

You book a cruise, tour or other trip that requires you to pay money up front. Sometime before the trip, the money you paid becomes all or partially nonrefundable. What I mean by nonrefundable is, that if you were to cancel your trip, you will not get any cash refunds.

How the trip cancellation benefit works:

Let's say, you and your spouse paid $5,000 each for a trip to the Galapagos Islands. Two days before you're supposed to leave you're going out to get the mail and you get hit by a cement truck. In my examples, no one ever dies, but if you are hit by a cement truck i'm sure your doctor would advise you against traveling.

The fact that your cancel your trip just two days before you were supposed to leave, means that it's highly unlikely you're going to receive any refund on the $10,000 ($5,000 each) you paid for your trip. However, if you had bought a trip cancellation travel insurance plan some time in the days or weeks or months prior to being hit by a cement truck, and had insured your $5,000 per person trip cost, your trip cancellation travel insurance plan will reimburse you 100% of the money you lost on the trip, or in this case the full $10,000.

However, let's say you only insured $3500 each of your $5,000 per person trip cost. In this case, the maximum amount of money you will receive from your trip cancellation travel insurance plan is $7,000 ($3,500 each), which is the maximum cost you had insured.

How the trip interruption benefit works:

You get to South America safely and this time, your brother-in-law (who you've never really cared for), is going out to get the mail and he gets hit by a cement truck. Even though you're sure he deserved it, out of respect you and your spouse cut your trip short and return home early.

Returning home means your interrupted trip will have some unused value as will your return plane tickets. Plus, you'll have to buy an expensive one-way last minute ticket home.

For the purposes of this example, your unused trip will be worth $3,000 for each of you. If you had insured your full $5,000 per person trip cost, your trip cancellation travel insurance plan will reimburse you up to $5,000 (and on some plans, a maximum of $7,500) of the money you lost on the trip plus the cost of the one-way last minute ticket home.

The maximum reimbursement depends on the percentage of trip cost you plan covers for trip interruption. Some plans state it as 100% of trip cost, while others cover as much as 150% of trip cost.

Travel insurance is probably one of the most confusing types of insurance around. Numerous clauses, sub-clauses and a myriad of little stipulations make for a very complicated policy, which nevertheless is very important for any holiday-maker.

People going on holiday tend to adopt an 'it won't happen to me' attitude and, hopefully, it won't. But nobody is immune to ill-health or robbery, and baggage loss can happen to the best of us. So, for sheer peace of mind, it's worth looking into travel insurance when booking your trip.

The medical aspect of a travel insurance policy is probably the most important and the most needed. Far more people fall ill abroad than you'd think, and the cost of OTC medication can be extortionate abroad as well as at home. Even contracting a simple stomach bug can cost you dearly. And if you need to be hospitalised in a foreign country, you could find yourself deeply out of pocket - most countries don't have an equivalent to the NHS.

It's important to remember that most travel insurance policies won't cover you for any problems related to pre-existing conditions such as diabetes, heart disease or cancer, especially if you haven't mentioned these to your insurer when taking out the policy. Like any other type of insurance, omitting details on application can result in claims being refused, so make sure you tell them everything. This also goes for any dependents who are travelling with you; their medical history needs to be disclosed, but if the holiday is cut short because of a pre-existing condition it's unlikely you'll be reimbursed. Pregnancy, although technically a pre-existing condition, will normally be covered as long as you will be less than 28 weeks pregnant by the end of your trip (24 weeks for a multiple pregnancy). This restriction can vary between insurers, so always check your policy.

If you lose your possessions on holiday, your insurer will normally only pay out if you had taken reasonable care of them; if you had left them unattended you will be seen as negligent and claims will normally be refused. Likewise, if you leave any valuables unattended in your hotel room, vehicle or mobile home, and they are stolen, you may not be able to claim. If possible, keep your valuables in a room or hotel safe, or keep them on your person.

If your holiday has to be cancelled, there are some situations you will not be covered for. If you cancel simply because you decide not to go, for example because of a relationship break-up, you won't be refunded. If your holiday is cancelled by the hotel, or if you have an accident or unforeseen emergency at home, most insurers will refund the costs you have paid so far, plus any cancellation fees due. Again, check your policy first to see what is and isn't covered.

When you look for a travel insurance policy, don't just go on price alone. Annual travel insurance may work out cheaper, but if you only go away once a year for two weeks, you'd only really need cover for that time. Also, read all the small print, and ask questions, to make sure the policy covers exactly what you need.

Travel Insurance is essential, and everybody should take a look at it, before hitting the road. The right insurance can easily spell the difference between a bargain flight and a financial disaster. On the other hand, many people buy insurance, which they do not need at all. Or, they buy insurance coverage which they already have through their credit card.

There are three general types of travel insurance

Health related insurances covering the risk of sickness or an accident on the road Luggage insurance Insurance covering change or cancellation penalties I want to make a few points for each category.

Travel Health Insurance

People need coverage of medical expenses at home. On the road you need it even more. The first step before buying special health coverage for your trip is a check of the policy of your existing health insurance. On the road you need treatment costs, including expenses for hospitals, and transport back home, to be covered. Very helpful is an emergency phone number, where you can reach somebody familiar with the country you are in. He may know the right doctors, have an idea which hospitals are good, and have a relationship with them allowing for treatment without the need to pay the hospital before you are admitted.

But please check the fine print. Mental illnesses are almost always excluded from coverage. If you have an address in the country you visit, or if you are a citizen of the country you visit, coverage via travel insurance may also be declined.

Luggage Insurance

This type of travel insurance is straightforward. If your luggage gets damaged or lost during your trip, you will be refunded. But check the fine print for excluded items. Expensive gear, like computers, cameras, jewelry and obviously cash are often excluded. There may be also provisions that you cannot leave expensive items in a car, or that some things need to be kept in a safe.

Insurance Covering Change Fees

A classic form of travel insurance covers the costs of changing or canceling a trip for specific reasons. The triggers may include sickness, pregnancy, death of a family member, unexpected unemployment and more. Check the policy of any insurance for these triggers, because they are not always the same.

Before insuring against a change penalty you need to have a hard look, whether it is really helpful. The trick is that insurance premiums are determined by the price you pay for your ticket or vacation package. But, on the other hand, penalties for changing or canceling a ticket are generally lower for higher priced flights and packages. This means, if you do not take care, you may pay 50 Dollars to cover a risk of 120 Dollars in case you need to cancel or change your plan. This does not make sense.

But it is also possible that a policy of no change and no refund allowed is connected to your ticket. In this case, you may lose the whole price you paid for your package, if you become at travel time. Under such rules travel insurance covering change and cancel penalties definitively makes sense

Firstly some facts and figures:

British Airways lost 23 bags for every 1000 passengers in 2006 - roughly 9 bags missing for every Jumbo jet flight. In 2006, The Association of European Airlines 24 members lost a staggering 5.6 million bags.

Around 85 per cent of these bags are re-united with their owners within 48 hours ( although this may be no consolation if you're on a 24 hour business trip or stopover!) This means up to 15 per cent of bags are gone forever - which is why Insurance companies recommend your travel insurance policy covers your bags whilst you are in the "care and keeping" of an airline.

Your travel insurer is more likely to give you a satisfactory payout and settlement - even allowing for any excess payments - than the airline, if your baggage is accepted as permanently missing.

Insurance company payouts versus airline payouts :

If your baggage is "delayed" ( this usually means up to 21 days ), you should be able to get a one off payment immediately to allow you to at least buy a change of underwear and some toiletries to tide you over until your bags arrive. This is usually between 50 and 75 pounds.

Your airline may pay out a fixed amount each day to allow you to buy a change of clothing - this type of payment will only usually cover a pre- set number of days. Your airline may be prepared to allow you to buy a reasonable amount of replacement items and reimburse you later. You must keep all receipts to prove the cost of the items you bought.

After 21 days, if your baggage is still missing, the airline should, under the terms of the Montreal Convention, treat it as permanently lost. This means your claim should now be settled - however, the maximum amount you will be offered is approximately 800 pounds and some claimants may be offered considerably less.

According to research, a good travel insurance policy, once your bags have been missing or delayed for 48 hours will pay you around 200 pounds - which will go some way to allowing you to at least buy some clothing and toiletries.

Once your bags are deemed to be permanently lost, a travel insurance policy on average , will settle your claim at a figure somewhere between 1500 and 2000 pounds. The maximum you would be able to claim would probably be 2500 pounds. Do your research before you go. Shop around for the best policy for your needs and make sure you have cover in place before your bags go on the conveyor belt!

Safety

Russia's crime problems are well known, particularly in major cities. They shouldn't be underestimated, either, when traveling. It's advisable to be cautious and take sensible precautions.

Insurance

Full coverage, with extras, is considered appropriate for Russian travel needs. Although Russian health care facilities are excellent, they're also potentially expensive. It's a good idea to go for full health coverage.

Hungary

Hungary is a beautiful holiday destination. It's a former Eastern bloc country, and like others has been recovering from relatively backward standards of living amenities.

Health

Health services are adequate, but in some areas old sanitation and facilities are issues. In remote areas medical services may be a problem.

Safety

Although Hungary is one of the safer countries in Eastern Europe, tourist targeting and theft are known situations.

Insurance: Good basic cover, with selective extras, is the recommended approach.

Croatia

Croatia has become a popular tourist destination since the civil war. Some areas are still showing signs of the conflict, and tourist facilities vary considerably.

Health services and amenities may vary regarding standards and availability in different regions.

Safety

Croatia is considered safe by Eastern European standards. However, there is a level of minor crime and there have been reports of tourists being targeted.
