England is my number one must see European Destination. Why is this? Perhaps its that the English language is spoken. Perhaps its the history, but I think the truth of it is that it is where (along with the rest of the British Isles), a fair proportion of my ancestors came from and that I am familiar with much of the history already. Although my family has been down under for 6 generations a trip to England will be a return to ancient homelands and hence my first port of call on any trip to Europe.

Number One:

Ole London Towne. LONDON. The capital of England tops the list for so many reasons, the history, the culture, the food, the mass of humanity. It deserves a mini-list of top 7 itself, so here it is

The British Museum - thanks to its old empire days here lies one of the greatest collections of artifacts in the world. Who cares if it was stolen, pillaged, whatever - I'm just thankful that its been protected all in one place.

Buckingham Palace - no not visit what has at least on the outside to be one of the ugliest palace around - but to see the sights such as the changing of the guard

Westminster Abbey - one of the best looking grave yards in the world. The Gothic architecture, poets corner and the historical tombs and monuments. Whilst there a quick photo op over at the houses of parliament and Big Ben (which is the name of the bell)

The Tower of London - just to lust over crown jewels, or to listen to the Beefeaters tell a few yarns, at least I won't be entering through traitor's gate.

Saint Paul's Cathedral - more crypts and a beautiful place of worship.

The Royal Albert Hall - preferably visiting on the last night of the proms.

Hyde Park - the serpentine, the beautiful trees or just the spaces of green.

(Some would argue I've missed out the Art Galleries, great sites - Trafalgar Square, Madame Tussaud's, other museums, Tower bridge, the London eye - perhaps after a visit I might be able to better rate these).

Number Two:

Windsor Castle - a place fit to be a palace. Plus I have a thing for small dolls houses (Queens Mary's Doll House).

Number Three:

Bath - perhaps the closest you can get to Roman Britain. The thermal activity brought the Roman Baths. The Avon River, the gardens - all make a nice day trip.

Number Four:

York - The most 'medieval' town in England. York Minister, City walls, the museums - all just drip history.

Number Five:

Cambridge - it may be the nice buildings, the wealth of knowledge, the gardens, but I think its the thought of having a punt on the river that really attracts.

Number Six:

Stonehenge - although some would argue that its the most overrated collection of rocks, prehistoric doesn't get much older.

Number Seven:

The new Forrest -The chance to see deer, old oak trees, a 'natural' setting and a picnic what could be more English?

By: Alastair Harris

1. Head to the British Museum.

The British Museum will fascinate even those uninterested in history. Featuring more than fifteen million artifacts, a visit to the British Museum is both an eye opener and an educational experience. Take your time to walk through the museum's numerous collections and if you are tired, you can always catch your breath at the museum cafe.

2. Take photos of the London Bridge at dusk.

The London Bridge is not only a London icon; it is also immensely beautiful in its own right. Stretching across the River Thames, the London Bridge is part of the A3 road. The serenely flowing river presents an interesting contrast to the sometimes busy traffic over the bridge. Head over here at dusk for excellent photo-taking opportunities.

3. Take time off to see the Clock Tower and Big Ben.

The clock tower is the world's largest, four-faced chiming clock and its design is simply breathtaking. The Big Ben, meanwhile, refers to the giant bell within the clock tower. They are also icons commonly associated with London, and you will have fun enjoying the sight and taking photos.

4. Witness the Changing of the Queens' Guards.

If you head to Buckingham Palace at the right time, you may be lucky enough to catch the changing of the Queens' guards, whereby the New Guards take over from the Old Guards, accompanied by music from a full military band. This takes place everyday from April to July, and on alternate days from August to March.

5. Go on a tour of the Palace of Westminster.

Such tours are only provided in the summer. However, this will allow you to take in the beautiful architecture and layout of the Palace, as well as to hear an educational commentary on the functions and history of the Palace.

6. Shop at Harrods.

Yet another icon of London, this is one place you have to go even if it is just to window shop. Harrod's seasonal Christmas department and Food Hall is famous. Look out also for the memorial sculptures dedicated to the late Princess Diana and Dodi Al Fayed.

7. Take a walk around Trafalgar Square.

Although feeding the pigeons is no longer allowed, you will still enjoy a brisk walk around this beautiful open square. There are also interesting monuments at each plinth that may capture your interest.

8. Visit St Paul's Cathedral.

This is a beautiful church that was built in 1710 to replace its Gothic predecessor, which was destroyed in a fire. The church has fantastic acoustics; be sure to take note of its Whispering Gallery.

9. Go on the London Eye.

This is an enormous structure akin to a Ferris wheel. A ride on the London Eye will give you spectacular panoramic views of London and it will be an exhilarating experience for the whole family.

10. Sit in Shakespeare's Globe

This is a famous historical playhouse that has existed since Shakespearean times. You can choose to watch a play in here or opt for an extensive educational tour.

By: Orson Johnson

They include Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, the Tower of London, British Museum and Hyde Park.

Anyone lucky enough -- and anyone who plans well -- will find that good weather makes the trip all the more enjoyable while standing in line outside of major attractions or strolling through London's famous parks and gardens.

London weather is moderate in temperature and rainfall throughout the year. The average monthly high temperature (mainly daytime) is about 58 degrees Fahrenheit, according to the World Weather Organization. The city averages about 72 degrees for the daytime highs in July and August; in the 60s during May, June and September; in the 50s March, April, October and November; and in the 40s during December, January and February.

The average monthly low temperature (mainly nighttime) is about 46 degrees with the lows dropping into the 50s from June through September; the 40s in April, May, October and November; and down to the 30s in December through March.

Rain is not a factor for any travel plans. The city averages about 12 rain days and two inches of rain per month during the course of the year with only moderate variation. Rainfall reaches its lightest point in February, while rain days decline to about 10 per month in June through September.

Vacationers with families will find that London's ideal weather is June through August, while travellers without children in school might consider September because of a combination of warm days, light rain and fewer crowds at the major attractions.

By: Scott Bateman

When you think of holidays in England I wonder what images enter your head first? Maybe the famous red buses in London? Or possibly the splendour of Windsor Castle, the Tower of London or Buckingham Palace?

All of those images point to some great features of England for visitors but there is a hidden side to the country. If you try and move away from the well-trodden routes of the tourist trail you’ll find some real gems.

A great example of this is the South West of England. This is a region of the country that is sometimes overlooked by visitors and yet contains all of the key elements for a wonderful stay. You can certainly be forgiven for knowing little about this area, so maybe you’re unaware that it contains the finest Roman spa town in the country, sandy beaches, an indoor rainforest and some great surfing. A real mixture for all the family!

There are so many wonderful places to visit in the south west that it’s difficult to know where to start. Indeed, you’ll find that this article only gives you a small taster of what the region has to offer.

To begin with, let’s turn our attention to Bath, the unique city that is a World Heritage Site. The city of Bath was founded before the Romans even arrived in the British Isles but it is the Romans who expanded the city and helped to build its reputation. This was primarily due to their construction of the extensive Roman Baths complex, which is still open to visitors. Indeed, you’re still able to drink the spa water, produced from a natural spring!

The city is also renowned for its splendid and distinctive Georgian architecture – nowhere is this more evident than when you see the Georgian crescents. As you would expect of an English city, you’ll also find a more modern mix of shops, restaurants, theatres and pubs. The beauty of Bath is that the modern and the ancient seem to live side by side.

Elsewhere in South West England, Cornwall is a hidden gem that seems to have remained that way despite the fondness of the English for visiting the county on their own holidays.

The world famous Eden Project has provided a central focus for tourism in the region but it is by no means all that is on offer. You’ll find quaint, traditional seaside towns, as well as modern locations where you can relax on the beach and even enjoy the best surfing conditions in the country (St Ives is particularly popular for this pursuit).

By: Keith Barrett
