As the capital of Massachusetts and the largest city in New England, Boston has long been regarded as one of the USA's premier cultural and historical cities. And whether or not you're a history buff, every tourist that visits Boston is made aware of its colonial history and its involvement in the American Revolutionary War. But why not make this historical aspect the focus of your city break in Boston? By exploring the city's main revolutionary sights, you'll definitely be able to get a more authentic feel for America's legacy of independence.

Start your journey at Boston Harbor, the site of the Boston Tea Party. The Boston Tea Party saw the American colonists destroy many crates of tea bricks on ships owned by the British East India Company in Boston Harbor, on December 16th 1773. The incident is widely held up by historians as a main trigger of the American Revolution; but one of its more immediate effects was in bringing about the Boston Port Act, which shut down the port until the East India Company was compensated for its loss.

Today, Boston Harbor has been transformed from a bustling commercial port to a leading ferry and leisure area of the city. You'll also be able to visit the Boston Tea Party Museum, located on the Fort Point Channel, which houses a full-scale replica of one of the ships involved in the event. Additionally, Boston Harbor is surrounded by a number of islands, many of which are part of the Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area.

Once you've visited Boston Harbour, take a trip down the Freedom Trail. Marked by a red brick path that runs through downtown Boston, the Freedom Trail takes visitors to sixteen significant historical sites in the city. These include some of Boston's best-known monuments to the American Revolutionary War such as the Bunker Hill Monument, which was erected to commemorate the Battle of Bunker Hill, one of the Revolution's most famous battles.

Paul Revere House is also part of Boston's Freedom Trail, and is the colonial home of the legendary Paul Revere. Revere is famous for his "midnight ride", in which he played the role of a messenger in the battles of Lexington and Concord before serving as an officer during the Revolutionary War, and his home is one of Boston's most visited monuments to the heroes of the American Revolution.

The compact nature of Boston city centre means that you'll be able to find many places to stay in downtown Boston that are just a stone's throw away from its main sights. For instance, locate a hotel in Boston that's in the heart of its historic district and you'll be able to see all of Boston's revolutionary heritage monuments in one weekend - so you won't even have to take a long vacation in order to pay homage to the city that played a crucial role in laying down the foundations of the modern United States.

By: Andrew Regan

Boston is a wonderful city and one that attracts many visitors every year. The historical significance combined with a large metropolitan area all located on the water makes it a very popular tourist destination. This article will offer travel tips from best ways to get there via airlines and Boston airport transportation or Manchester airport transportation, where to stay and things to do and see while being a visitor in Boston no matter what time of the year you go.

There are many airline deals to be found these days and if you are up to finding the best deal yourself, try the website kayak.com that offers the prices of all of the competing airlines giving you a great comparison of deals. Remember if you choose to travel on Tuesday, Wednesday or Saturday, those are the least expensive days to go so plan accordingly. Because you will be in a city with great transportation of trains, taxis and even boats, a car will not be necessary and parking in Boston is horrible so just take an airport shuttle or the train to get to your hotel downtown.

There are so many things to do and see while in Boston that making a plan is probably the best way to see the most you can. One of the absolute must do's in Boston is to walk the Freedom trail. This is a great way to experience colonial history and can see 16 different sites along the trail. It is easy to follow as it is marked by a stripe to follow throughout Boston. The best way is to start the trail in the morning and that will land you in Quincy Market around lunchtime which is one of the best food markets around. Try Boston's holy trinity of lobster, clams or chowder to experience true local flavors.

The North End of Boston is a great section of Boston with the famous old North Church and Paul Reveres home that is a special piece of history to witness. Nearby the North End is Boston's Little Italy that has more authentic small family owned Italian restaurants and bistros to count so be sure to stop in one to get a wonderful bite to eat.

Another section of Boston that many people enjoy visiting is Beacon Hill filled with a the oldest park in the country and beautiful old buildings. If shopping is what you are interested in, go to Charles Street to hit a variety of popular stores as well as fun local boutiques.

The waterfront area is the last place to see while in Boston and that is also a wonderful place to go if you are a family traveling with children. Located near the water is the Children's Museum and the Boston Tea Museum as well as the beautifully renovated New England Aquarium. If you are a baseball fan, try to catch a Red Sox game at Fenway Park although being able to find a ticket may be difficult as Red Sox fans are some of the most loyal.

By: Connor R Sullivan

New England is one of the most beautiful regions of the country. I have been there many times, mainly with my family. My parents used to rent a house up at Cape Cod every summer, where my sister and I would stay with them. I have also been to Boston many times. Some other fun places to visit in New England are the islands of Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard as well as Acadia National Park in Maine.

Cape Cod is beautiful, especially in the fall when all the trees change color. I have never been there in the fall but I've been there many times in the summer with my family, when it's also quite pleasant. The cape runs about 30 miles north along the Atlantic coast and has some nice beaches. Provincetown is right on the tip of the cape. This is a fun town with lots of hip youngsters and some fun shops.

Boston is one of my favorite cities in the United States. I have been on the Freedom Trail twice, which passes by several important buildings pertaining to the American Revolution, including Fanneuil Hall, an old market, as well as the North Church, where Paul Revere began his famous ride. Fanneuil Hall contains Durgin Park, one of my favorite restaurants, with superb prime rib as well as some exquisite clam chowder.

A trip to New England would not be complete without visiting Maine. I was in Maine with my family for a week and ate lobster every day. Lobster is so cheap in Maine that you see hamburger stands which also sell lobster. Acadia National Park is a beautiful spot in Maine, well worth the trip up there.

By: David Terr
