Croydon is considered a major commercial center and also the largest town in South London and it also the administrative centre of the London Borough of Croydon. The city is located just about 9.5 miles from the south of Charing Cross and the city is also one of the main metropolitan centers that are identified by London Plan. Croydon is situated on the natural transport corridor which is between south coast of England and London just towards north of the gap in the North Downs.

The city of Croydon was well known and renowned for several important industrial companies during the early 20th century as they were known for car manufacturing and metal working. These sectors during the mid 20th century have been replaced with a service economy and retailing which have helped in bringing a massive redevelopment of Whitgift shopping centre and office blocks. The city was merged with the Greater London during 1965.

Although road traffic is currently diverted away from the largely pedestrianised town centre there is the main railway station known as East Croydon that is still a major hub servicing the national railway transport system.

Modern Croydon and attractions

In the modern Croydon the city has developed to a major center for shopping with the outstanding construction of the Whitgift Center that was actually opened in the year 1969. There is also the Fairfield halls arts center that also hosts event venues which was opened during 1962 and the warehouse theatre which dates back to 1977. There were even further changes during the 1990s that were intended to give the city a more attractive look.

These changes or developments include the end of North End to vehicles during 1989 and they then opened the Croydon Clocktower arts center during the year 1994. There are new and equally large shopping centers that have been opened during the 2004 besides the Whitgift centre. Apart from this ere are also large new shopping center including park palace that would replace most of the eastern edge around the shopping center. The area of Croydon is served by different hospitals from which the main hospital is the Mayday University Hospital located at London Road.

Things to do in Croydon

The city of Croydon once possessed three aerated water factories including two foundries, gas lamps lighting the street and the town also carries the names like Bodo and Ole King Cole. The Outdoor Museum located at the Samwell Street is the best place to find early mining machinery of the edge of steam. Apart from this the Old Court House and the Mining office of Warden is where you can find original furnishings including other artifacts which are collected by council and other interested parties. The Golden Gate which is nearly 4.5 miles from West of Croydon is the place that produced tons of gold and it also the largest satellite town in Croydon. However you can also get to the old butcher shop which is just opposite the well known historic Club Hotel for an excellent photographic study.

By: David Ravech

The Borough of Ealing
Ealing is actually the principal town in the London Borough of Ealing, one of the main metropolitan centres in the London Plan. This place is also known as 'the Queen of the Suburbs'. Some of the main attractions that one can find in Ealing are the Boston Manor House, Musical Museum, the Kew Bridge Steam Museum and many such attractions. Some of the major towns in Ealing are Kew Bridge, Kew Green and Greenford.

Boston Manor House
The Manor House is a Jacobean manor house which was built in the year 1623. It is located in parkland and contains a beautiful lake along with ancient cedar trees. This house was purchased in 1670 by Clitherow family who stayed in the house till it became a local council property in 1924. Presently, this magnificent 17th century house can be visited and enjoyed by general public for free. There are the state rooms on the first floor and dining room and library on the ground floor.

One can find some excellent decorated plaster ceilings of the past era and there are more than 80 painting collections on the wall. This includes historic views of Chiswick, Isleworth and Brentford. Some parts of the house can be hired for functions and wedding receptions too. The opening timings, admission charges and directions to visit the house are also specified on the site, wherein the information is provided.

Musical museum
One can experience some fascinating world of automatic musical instruments during his visit to the musical museum. There are non-stop demonstrations wherein the instruments are properly explained and played. One can get to hear the sounds from the past like the sweet tone musical box, the concert pianist subtle sounds, the grandeur of pipe organ and many more. Whether such instruments were manufactured for the exclusive wealthy homes or for more humble dwellings, their whole background is described to the person who can see and hear them play automatically. Thus, it takes around 90 minutes of journey in such museum.

Kew Bridge museum
The Kew Bridge museum has a wonderful collection of water pumping machines.

A lot of engines are on view and "steamed-up" each weekend includeing the Grand Junction 90 which has pumped water to west London for a century. This is the biggest working beam engine in the world and houses a magnificent 19th century pumping station. There are over five original Cornish Engines with unique range of modern diesel and steam pumping machinery.

Osterley Park
Osterley Park is a spectacular 18th century house. The interior of the Osterley Park house is one of the Britain's most complete illustrations of Robert Adam's work. There is also the Royal Botanic Garden at Kew which offers its visitors lots of interesting sights. There are displays of welcome spring flowers, tints of autumn and colourful summer borders in the arboretum.

One can also visit the natural history museum along with the science museum wherein there are some great wonders of the ancient, industrial and technological age exhibits.

By: David Ravech
