As the weather cools off and the crowds calm down, autumn is the perfect time to visit Boston. Whether you’re getting your son or daughter set up in their new dorm room or discovering Boston for the first time, you’ll want to check out these seasonal activities on your next trip to Boston.

1.	Take a fall foliage tour. New England is known for its vivid autumn colors. From mid-September through October, maple, oak, birch, and other trees blossom with fiery red, sunny yellow, and golden hued leaves. Gray Line offers a fall foliage day tour which runs from mid-September to mid-October. You’ll ride past gently rolling hills dotted with autumn leaves and enjoy stops at a New England tavern and an apple orchard.

2.	Bike the Minuteman Bikeway. If you’re looking for a more active way to enjoy New England’s fall foliage on your trip to Boston, rent a bike and head to the Minuteman Bikeway. This scenic bikeway retraces Paul Revere’s historic mid-night ride to alert New Englanders of the Brits’ arrival. Along the way, you’ll bike through Bedford, Lexington, Arlington, and Cambridge in a route that is particularly scenic during the autumn, when leaves turn festive shades of gold and red. Open year round and free to all!

3.	Explore Salem, Massachusetts. Salem is famous for the Salem Witch Trials over three hundred years ago, but the town still plays up its haunted history every October with reenactments and other events. While exploring Salem, be sure to visit the Salem Witch Museum and the House of Seven Gables.

4.	Visit Plimouth Plantation. Before you enjoy another Thanksgiving feast, step back in time and see what life was really like in Plimouth Colony during the seventeenth century. This living history museum lets you visit a Wampanoag homesite and talk with descendants of New England’s original inhabitants. You can also wander a recreated 1627 farming village and see tailors, potters, and basket makers using the same techniques used by the Pilgrims when they first settled in Plimouth.

5.	Enjoy a bowl of clam chowder. What could be more satisfying than warming up with a bowl of New England clam chowder after a busy day of sightseeing? Cheers in Faneuil Hall and Beacon Hill offers award-winning clam chowder, as well as a mouthwatering selection of burgers, salads, drinks, and more. Get 15% off lunch or dinner with a Go Boston Card!

By: Susan E. Johnston

New England is one of the most beautiful regions of the country. I have been there many times, mainly with my family. My parents used to rent a house up at Cape Cod every summer, where my sister and I would stay with them. I have also been to Boston many times. Some other fun places to visit in New England are the islands of Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard as well as Acadia National Park in Maine.

Cape Cod is beautiful, especially in the fall when all the trees change color. I have never been there in the fall but I've been there many times in the summer with my family, when it's also quite pleasant. The cape runs about 30 miles north along the Atlantic coast and has some nice beaches. Provincetown is right on the tip of the cape. This is a fun town with lots of hip youngsters and some fun shops.

Boston is one of my favorite cities in the United States. I have been on the Freedom Trail twice, which passes by several important buildings pertaining to the American Revolution, including Fanneuil Hall, an old market, as well as the North Church, where Paul Revere began his famous ride. Fanneuil Hall contains Durgin Park, one of my favorite restaurants, with superb prime rib as well as some exquisite clam chowder.

A trip to New England would not be complete without visiting Maine. I was in Maine with my family for a week and ate lobster every day. Lobster is so cheap in Maine that you see hamburger stands which also sell lobster. Acadia National Park is a beautiful spot in Maine, well worth the trip up there.

By: David Terr
