The large town of Solihull, West Midlands, England is a vital part of this west-central area of the country. It is a component of the collection of large towns and cities in the region which is known as a conurbation. The town currently enjoys a population of around 95,000 on its own. As a part of a larger metropolitan area, it can count upwards of 201,000 within its family.

Solihull is considered to be one of the most prosperous population centers in the English Midlands, which has a history going back to the old medieval Kingdom of Mercia. This region stretches from coast to coast, in the midline of the country. The meaning of the town's name is derived from it being near to a dirty or muddy or "soily" hill.

Solihull can trace its existence back to medieval times, when it was established as a market town, after people began to gather in a clearing in the forest to trade and barter goods. This was nearly a thousand years ago. Architecturally, there are classic examples of Tudor wooden-framed houses still standing in the town. There is also a church in Solihull, St. Alphege's, which was first established in 1220. Its nearly-170 foot high spire can be seen for miles around.

Life in the town continued much as always all the way up through the 20th century. In fact, the Industrial Revolution largely passed Solihull by. By the 1960s, however, nearly 100,000 people called the immediate vicinity home. This was mainly due to development of large tracts of land for subdivisions and other neighborhoods.

West Midlands, the metropolitan county in which the town of Solihull resides, has a population of around 2.6 million people. Like many other counties in England, it came into being in 1974 as a part of the reorganization carried out under the auspices of the Local Government Act of 1972. It is also a completely landlocked county. Both Solihull and West Midlands lie in a prosperous and beautiful portion of England, and they each present many fine tourist opportunities.

By: Simon Haughtone
